juz came back from the 30hr Famine Under No Roof Camp 2006 at SAJC. i think the camp really opened my mind to lots of stuff...stuff i din knew, stuff i knew but didn't gave much thoughts about...it set me thinking. over e 2D1N camp, short, but impactful, i think most of e campers learnt quite a lot
day 1: stimulation. all the groups were 'transformed' into African families and scattered all ard e SA compound. took us bout 2hrs to get our 'family' intact. den we played games to earn money to build our home-which was made out of chairs, tables and trash bags. and then came in another learning pt-how vicious human beings can be. our 'home' got raided on purpose and practically nothing was left. honestly i don't know wad's wrong wif human brains and how evil they can get...if this game was meant to bring out how unfair e world and how selfish human beings are, den i think it was quite quite successful. i just felt totally disgusted at how pple are behaving, but then it IS the real world, and the real world is never beautiful...
slept at the parade square under no roof, phew it din rain. saw a pigeon who refused to flew away even though it cud...seems to love the SA compound...which is infested with centipedes and millipedes and beetles...food?
day 2: went to tampines to collect newspaper. meet all the weird pple from all walks of life.
setting: a living room where a HUGE pile of newpapers lay very very obviously
uncle: "sorry we dun have newspapers"
like wad de h**k....=_=...it doesnt hurt to donate newspapers...right? horribly selfish ignorant pple...human nature is just so ugly
World Vision and the Habitat for Humanity also showed various videos of children in poverty areas, which are in really bad and filthy conditions that are unfit for pple to live in...i mean...it just hits that as you think bout ur own life and compared to theirs, we Singaporeans are really much much more lucky and i dun see why pple are complaining bout their lives...it just shows how ignorant and selfish and self-centered we are.
the camp might not be the most effective way to raise awareness of these global issues, but at least...if only one person could continue to help and work...then he/she has made a difference. its not only abt helping the poor, sick and needy. Its also abt learning the meaning of life...
'as long as there are pple, even one, who has been inspired, then this camp was never a failure, cause everyone makes a difference'
